Summarized from O’Sullivan I, Jeavons R. Survey of blood gas interpretation. Emerg Med J 2005; 22: 391-92.

If the results of a "‘small snapshot survey" are representative, then there is a need for continued education of UK medical staff in the interpretation of arterial blood gas (ABG) results. Sixty-six medical staff of all grades and from a range of disciplines, all working at one hospital, were asked to complete a questionnaire that tested their knowledge in this area.

Five sets of arterial blood gas result from real patient cases were presented for interpretation. Just 54 % correctly identified reference ranges of ABG parameters and although 71 % correctly identified the abnormality in each case, only a quarter of doctors offered correct differential diagnosis.
